Realising human potential in a changing world

Understanding the complex nature of human performance and expertise, especially ways to assess, enhance and future proof human potential.

About us

The Macquarie University Performance and Expertise Centre is an applied research centre specialising in human expertise and performance.

We draw on our world-leading research into the complex nature of skill acquisition, maintenance and deployment to develop state-of-the-art expertise assessment and training systems. In doing so, we help businesses more effectively assess and develop their employees’ expertise and performance to meet the unique and evolving challenges of the modern world.

Our research priorities

Our vision is to become the world’s leading research centre directed towards:

  • understanding the complex nature of expertise, its maintenance and decay
  • developing state-of-the-art expertise training and assessment systems.

Central to achieving this vision is strengthening the centre’s research capabilities and partnerships across six domains:

Expertise and performance assessment

  • Measure and evaluate expertise in creative, team and complex performance contexts.
  • Forecast future expertise and training needs.

Training assessment and design

  • Determine how emerging technologies can help with the acquisition and maintenance of human expertise and optimise human training and performance.

Workplace and work processes design

  • Optimise workplace policies environments and culture to minimise fatigue, stress, and performance errors.
  • Develop policies to create agile and adaptive teams and organisation structures.

AI systems integration

  • Develop, assess, and implement human-machine and human-AI teaming, training, and workplace systems.

Simulation technologies

  • Design virtual, augmented, and mixed-reality training and performance assessment systems.

Advanced data analytics

  • Utilising sophisticated analysis and machine learning techniques and tools to extract meaningful insights from complex datasets, for the assessment of human performance and to improve organisational decision-making and strategic planning.

Our objectives

Our mission is to identify, assess, enhance and future-proof the performance and expertise of individuals, teams and organisations. We achieve this through our expertise in the following areas:

  • data analytics techniques
  • behavioural measurement tools
  • physiological measurement tools
  • simulation methodologies (AR/VR)
  • machine learning and AI.

Our interdisciplinary team is at the cutting edge of performance and expertise assessment and training. This allows us to provide innovative best practice insights and services for our business partners – now and into the future.
